National Junior Honor Society

Membership Criteria

All seventh and eighth grade students who have attended St. Mary’s Catholic School for a minimum of the equivalent of one semester (half year) are eligible for consideration for membership in the St. Mary’s Catholic School Chapter of NJHS. The faculty council of the chapter selects students who demonstrate outstanding performance in all five criteria of NJHS – scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship and character.
 

• Maintains an overall average of 92.5% or above in academic subjects (Math, Religion, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, Reading, and Spanish), as evidenced at First Trimester Report Card
• Maintains a qualifying overall average at each formal marking period to maintain membership

• Volunteers his/her service to the school and/or the community without compensation
• Participates in some service activity outside of school – altar server, scouting, etc.
• Works well with others and is willing to take on responsibilities
• Is willing to represent the class or school in interclass and interscholastic competition
• Shows courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers, and students

• Is a leader in the classroom, or in other school or community activities
• Exercises positive influence on peers in upholding school mission, ideals and spirit
• Models positive behavior and encourages cooperative positive behavior in others
• Demonstrates academic initiative, organization and responsibility
• Demonstrates positive attitudes, reliability and dependability

• Shows courtesy, concern, and respect for peers and adults
• Exhibits high standards of honesty, reliability, and academic and personal integrity
• Accepts correction, suggestions and disappointment graciously
• Follows school rules, is punctual, trustworthy and faithful both inside and outside the classroom

• Demonstrates civic values such as freedom, democracy and justice through one’s actions and choices
• Is active in school /community, a member of school clubs, scouting or community / church organizations
• Shows respect for the dignity and rights of others, as well as concern for the common good
• Cares for one’s own property; respects school property and the property of others
   

All five criteria will be considered in determining eligibility for membership in National Junior Honor Society. Candidates for membership are asked to explain how they exhibit each of the characteristics described. NJHS Members are asked each year to document how they exhibit each characteristic in order to maintain membership.
